How Does a Referral Model Actually Work? An Honest Answer (2026)

How Does a Referral Model Actually Work? An Honest Answer (2026)

August 14, 2026

The short answer

You shop at a private membership store instead of a grocery store. If someone you know does the same because of you, you earn a cut of what they buy.

That is the whole thing. No boxes in your garage. Nothing to sell out of a car.

Now the part nobody puts in the graphic. Most people who start earn a small amount and then stop. Not some. Most.

I will not show you a number I cannot back up. The FTC says any earnings claim has to be true and backed up. And you have been lied to enough.

I can tell you how it works. What it costs. Who it is wrong for. That is this page.

Twenty minutes, and you decide nothing on the call

I will show you how the money actually moves, on Zoom, in twenty minutes. Bring the questions you would ask an accountant. It is free because I would rather you see the arithmetic than take my word for it. No slides, no pitch.

Book the 20 minute call You can always say no.

How does the referral model actually work?

Quick answer: you move your own shopping, and you get paid a percentage when other people move theirs.

Take the fancy words off. There are three parts.

One. You buy your home goods from a private membership store, not a big box store.

Soap. Laundry. Cleaners. Vitamins. The things that run out every month.

You were going to buy them anyway. The only change is where the order goes.

Two. If someone you know does the same through you, you earn a cut of what they spend each month.

Not a one time fee. A cut, for as long as they shop.

Three. If one of those people does the same, you earn a smaller cut on that too. A few layers down.

That is the part people call a pyramid. I get why.

So here is the test. Does the money come from goods people use? Or from signing people up?

If it pays you to sign people up, walk away. That is not a small point. That is the whole point.

What is not part of it. No stock. No parties in your front room. No sales quota. No boxes to shift.

What do most people actually earn?

Quick answer: a small amount, and then most of them stop. That is the honest shape of it.

This is where most pages start lying. So let me be plain.

I will not give you an income number. Not mine. Not a team average. Not a "some of my people make" number.

I would have to back it up in writing. And a number from a woman on the internet is worth nothing to you.

I will tell you the shape of it. The shape is what matters.

  • Most people earn a small amount. Often just enough to cover their own order. That is a real result, and for a lot of women it is the whole point.
  • Most people stop. In this whole trade, most who sign up are gone before long. Anyone who says different is selling you something.
  • It builds slowly, or not at all. There is no month where it shoots up. If someone shows you a chart that does, ask what is behind it.
  • The ones who did build something took years. Usually while doing another job. Usually because they used the goods first.

If that reads like a bad pitch, good. It is not a pitch. It is what I would want said to me.

Why will nobody give you a straight number?

Quick answer: an honest number is hard. A dishonest one is now a legal problem.

The FTC guidance on this trade is blunt. Any earnings claim must be true, backed up, and not misleading.

And it must show the typical person's income and what they spent.

That last bit kills most of the numbers you have seen.

Money in is not the same as money kept. Leave out what they spent, and it is not an honest number.

The FTC also says the small print does not fix it. Putting "results not typical" under a screenshot is not enough.

To count, it has to be big, in plain words, and right next to the claim.

They are not done either. In 2024 FTC staff read 70 of these income statements and wrote up what they found.

In January 2025 they put forward a new Earnings Claim Rule.

In June 2026 they said it again: back up your earnings claims.

So when anyone shows you a number, ask one thing. Can you back that up, and does it count what you spent?

Then watch what happens. That one question is the best filter you have. Use it on me too.

What does it actually cost to start?

Quick answer: the cost is your monthly order, which replaces shopping you already do.

The questionThe honest answerWhat to watch for elsewhere
Is there a buy-in?A small membership. Then you order home goods monthly, like anywhere elseA big upfront starter pack you must buy and resell. That is stock loading
Do I have to hold stock? No. Orders ship to the person who ordered themAnyone whose garage is full of product they paid for
Is there a monthly minimum? You order what your home uses. It is a shop, not a quotaA set amount you must hit whether you need it or not
Can I just be a customer?Yes, and most people are. The income side is optionalAny setup where being only a shopper counts as failing

How is this different from the thing your friend pitched you in 2009?

Quick answer: in one real way and one that matters less than people think.

The real difference: this is a shop. The money moves because homes buy soap and shampoo they were buying anyway.

Nobody is asked to sell a dream to their cousin.

The way it is not different: it is still the same basic shape. Pretending it is not would be the exact thing this page exists to stop.

If the shape itself is your problem, that is fair. I am not going to argue you out of it.

Here is my part of it. I did not come to this wanting a business.

I had kept a non toxic house for years. I was tired of the only other choice being a shelf of things I would not use.

The supply chain came first. The income came long after.

Two women talking over coffee, one showing the other something on a phone

Who is this genuinely wrong for?

Quick answer: more people than any recruiter will ever tell you.

  • Anyone who needs money this month. This is not that. If rent is due, this is the wrong door. I would rather say so now.
  • Anyone who does not like the products. If you would not buy them anyway, the whole thing falls apart. It should.
  • Anyone hoping to never talk to people. It is talking. That is the job. No version of it runs while you sleep.
  • Anyone who wants a promise. There is not one. What there is, is a thing you can try in your own house and never mention to a soul.

Shannon's Advice

Straight talk from Shannon

I do not call them grocery stores. They are poison centers meant to do you and your family harm. It is not just the brands who are doing the harm, it is the stores themselves. They allow these toxic products on their shelves. People are sick and dying. This is a very serious matter. How can we ever trust them again?

We can't trust them. That is where Switch to America comes in. We are a new supply chain, built on family values, trust and affordability.

You do not have to take my word for it. The proof is in my blog posts, the recalls, the lawsuits and the fines. Also, inside my Switch Circle private community, we talk about real solutions.

Women come to me exhausted, in pain, stressed out, and on a list of prescriptions they never wanted. I have spent over 20 years helping women get off prescription medications. I help families reclaim their health.

We cannot stop them. I have stopped expecting to. However, we can stop walking into their stores. We are linking arms and together taking our control back. Control of our health and our finances.

Where to check me

You have the mechanics now. The rest is your own numbers.

This page gave you the model and the honest average. What it cannot tell you is whether it fits your life, your hours and the people you already talk to. That takes twenty minutes and your actual situation, not a landing page.

Book the 20 minute call If it is not a fit, I will say so on the call and we will hang up.

What else do people ask?

Is this a pyramid scheme? A pyramid scheme pays people for recruiting. If the money in a model comes from signing people up rather than from products households actually use, that is the thing to run from. Ask where the money originates and do not accept a vague answer, from me or from anyone.

Why will you not tell me what you earn? Because a figure I cannot substantiate in writing is worth nothing to you and is a problem for me. The FTC has been explicit that earnings claims must be truthful, substantiated and presented with expenses included. I would rather be the one person in this industry who does not show you a screenshot.

Do I have to recruit anybody? No. Most people never do. You can shop, save on your own household, and never mention it once.

What actually happens on the free call? Twenty minutes on Zoom. You bring your own numbers and we look at them together. No card, no presentation, and you decide nothing on the call.

Who you become

You become the woman who asks where the money comes from before she asks how much, and who can tell the difference between a business and a bet. That question protects you for the rest of your life, and it works on every opportunity anyone ever brings you, including this one.
