Etsy and eBay Keep Raising Fees. When Does a Shop Stop Being Worth It? (2026)
The short answer
You are packing more orders than last year for the same money. Your shop is not the problem.
Etsy told its shareholders it kept 25.9 cents of every dollar sold there in the second quarter of 2026. A year before, it kept 25.4 cents.
A shop stops being worth it on the day the fee costs more than the traffic. And you still cannot reach the buyer again.
What this guide answers
Where does the money from a $30 sale actually go?
Quick answer: three fees come out before you touch it. A fourth if an ad found her.
Say you sell a $30 item on Etsy. You are in the US. Your price covers the shipping.
First, $0.20 to put the listing up. Etsy's fee page says that is due whether it sells or not. The listing runs four months. Then you pay again.
Second, the sale itself. The fee is 6.5% of the whole order, so $1.95. Etsy's page is plain that this "applies to shipping and gift wrapping" too.
Third, getting paid. US sellers pay 3% plus $0.25. On $30 that is $1.15.
Add it up. $3.30 is gone and you keep $26.70.
That is the good day.

You can always say no.Now the other day. An Offsite Ad found your buyer.
Etsy charges 15% of the order total for that. If your shop has cleared $10,000 in any 365 days, the rate drops to 12%.
15% of $30 is $4.50. Your $3.30 just became $7.80.
You keep $22.20. Etsy took 26 cents of your dollar, and your thread and postage are not paid for yet.
eBay is one fee instead of three. In most categories it is 13.6% of the sale, plus $0.40 on any order over $10. On $30 that is $4.48, and you keep $25.52.
Now read what eBay counts as the sale. The item price. Any handling charge. The shipping the buyer paid. And the sales tax.
You never touch that tax. You pay a fee on it anyway.
Why does it feel worse than the fee list says?
Quick answer: the headline rates barely moved. The ads did.
Etsy last raised its sale fee on April 11, 2022, from 5% to 6.5%. Thousands of shops shut for a week over it. It went in anyway.
On a $30 sale that raise cost 45 cents. So that is not what you are feeling.
What you are feeling is the take rate. That is Etsy's own word for its cut of every dollar sold there.
In its letter to shareholders, Etsy put that at 25.9% for the second quarter of 2026. The year before it was 25.4%.
Etsy names the cause in the same breath. The rise was "primarily driven by Etsy Ads", and Offsite Ads added more.
And you cannot always say no. Once your shop has made $10,000 in any 365 days, Etsy says you are enrolled in Offsite Ads "for the lifetime of your shop".
eBay moved too, just slower. It raised final value fees in most categories on February 14, 2025. Its notice calls that an adjustment.
What do Etsy and eBay actually give you?
Quick answer: buyers. Millions of them, and you never had to go find one.
Etsy told shareholders it had about 87 million active buyers in the twelve months to June. You did not build that.
eBay hands you 250 listings a month for nothing, then charges $0.35 each after that.
The ad fee only lands when the ad actually sells something. It is capped at $100 an order.
Every number above came off their own pages.
That traffic is worth paying for. The question is what it is worth to you.
| One $30 sale | Etsy | eBay |
|---|---|---|
| To list it | $0.20, every four months | First 250 a month free, then $0.35 |
| When it sells | 6.5%, and that counts shipping | 13.6% plus $0.40, and that counts sales tax |
| To get paid | 3% plus $0.25 | Included |
| If an ad found her | Add 15%, or 12% over $10,000 | Nothing added unless you promote it |
| You keep | $26.70, or $22.20 after the ad | $25.52 |
| Who can reach her in March | Etsy | eBay |
So when does a shop stop being worth it?
Quick answer: when the fee beats the traffic, and you cannot reach the buyer twice.
Two things have to be true.
The first is arithmetic. Work out your real rate. Then ask what it would cost to find those buyers yourself. If your own way is cheaper, the traffic has stopped paying for itself.
The second half is the one nobody says.
Ask who owns your buyer. Not who shipped the box. Who can reach her in March.
Look at what happens on eBay if you try. Its fee page says that if you offer or reference your contact information in the context of buying or selling outside eBay, you are charged a final value fee "even if your item doesn't sell".
Read that twice. The relationship is the thing they are pricing.
And so you can sell there nine years and still open every Monday at zero. That is not a fee problem. It is an ownership problem, and no fee cut fixes it.
Now the part that cuts against me, because you deserve it straight.
Owning the relationship is slower. A listing can sell tonight. A buyer who comes back on her own pays you nothing in the first month.
I am not telling you to close your shop. A shop that pays for itself is a good thing to own.
What I would not do is let it be the only thing you own.
What would I do first on Monday?
Quick answer: work out your real rate, then write down the people.
Work out your real rate
Open your last ten orders. Total the fees. Divide by the sales. Write that number where you pack.
It is easy to guess low, because the fees come off in pieces. On paper it stops being a feeling in your stomach.
Find the buyers you already have
Do not skip this. It is the only thing you own outright.
Write down every repeat buyer you can remember. The one who ordered twice at Christmas. The one who sent her sister.
Nobody switches those names off from an office in another state.
Ask any new thing five questions
What does it cost to start, all in. Is there a monthly requirement. What happens to my customers if I stop. Where is the income disclosure and can I read it. Who makes money when I join, and how.
Take those five to every offer put in front of you. If somebody dodges one, that is your answer.
Ask me the same five, and I will answer every one on the call. Switch to America is a private membership store. We are the manufacturer, so no middleman and no markup. No monthly requirement.
You pay what a brand new customer pays. Anybody who discounts you on day one is buying you, not building with you.
And I will not hand you a number to expect. Nobody honest can.
Shannon's Advice
Straight talk from ShannonI do not call them grocery stores. They are poison centers meant to do you and your family harm. It is not just the brands who are doing the harm, it is the stores themselves. They allow these toxic products on their shelves. People are sick and dying. This is a very serious matter. How can we ever trust them again?
We can't trust them. That is where Switch to America comes in. We are a new supply chain, built on family values, trust and affordability.
You do not have to take my word for it. The proof is in my blog posts, the recalls, the lawsuits and the fines. Also, inside my Switch Circle private community, we talk about real solutions.
Women come to me exhausted, in pain, stressed out, and on a list of prescriptions they never wanted. I have spent over 20 years helping women get off prescription medications. I help families reclaim their health.
We cannot stop them. I have stopped expecting to. However, we can stop walking into their stores. We are linking arms and together taking our control back. Control of our health and our finances.

What else are you asking me about this?
Can I just opt out of Offsite Ads?
Only if your shop has never made $10,000 in any 365 day stretch. Etsy's page says that once you cross it, you are in for the lifetime of your shop.
Is eBay cheaper than Etsy?
Not on a plain $30 sale. Etsy leaves you about a dollar more there. On a sale an Etsy ad brought in, eBay leaves you about three more. And eBay charges 13.6% on sales tax too.
Should I raise my prices to cover it?
You can. Both fees are a percentage, so a higher price hands them more too.
Do I have to close my shop to try something else?
No. Nothing has to be deleted or announced. This sits beside that work, not on top of it.
What if I only have thirty regular buyers?
You are further ahead than you think. A listing needs a crowd, because it pays once. Thirty buyers who reorder do not.
Here is what I want for you, whether or not we ever speak.
You learned to photograph, price, pack and answer a stranger at ten at night. That is a whole trade, and you built it on rented ground.
You become the one who owns the customer, not the listing.
